Pergola Designs – How to Build a Pergola With Ready Made Designs and Save Money

February 22nd, 2012

Pergola Designs are there just for the simple reason to save a great deal of money in one of the most expensive home and garden features. I know this for a fact because I built my own pergola in a long weekend holiday from scratch, using just a few basic tools like hammer, nails, saw, sandpaper, special wood stain and a pergola plan. A ready made kit would have set me back few thousand dollars, while my patio pergola construction only set me back few hundred dollars in materials, a carpenter friend help, a case of beer and a pergola design.

Pergolas come in different size and shape, from rectangular or square, to circular or triangular, depending on location and use. They very much enhance the coziness of a garden or a patio, providing shade and a pleasant resting area. The only drawback to such an appealing piece of home and garden feature is the cost normally associated with ready made kits, or the technical difficulties in building one, should you lack carpeting skills. I am no carpenter, but with a bit of help and following a laid out pergola design I managed to set up a beautiful 2 levels patio pergola in the front of my house overlooking the garden.

It is important to decide where to build your custom made pergola to begin with, so as to re-landscape the garden in necessary. Gardens, patios, and backyards are the locations of common choice, but it is also possible to build pergolas over walkways to draw the eye and give sun protection in a visually appealing way. Then size and shape can be decided, and finally the materials.

Pergolas can be built with aluminum, vinyl, but most commonly wood. Wood is not only a very flexible and easy to build material, but it is also visually appealing, warm, and cozy. Cedar wood or red wood are excellent choices for their durability. It is better to stain and treat them against rot, though. I stained my red wood pergola with an outdoor resin based wood stain for protection against UVA and rain, which even increased the wood natural beauty by bringing out all the texture and patterns.

Should you decide to build a wood deck underneath, then you should stain that with an oil based special deck paint for extreme protection to wear and tear, as well as sun and rain. Pergola plans can vary a lot depending on size, style, and materials chosen, with some being inadequate, inaccurate, or too simplistic for proper construction. However it is still possible to find simple to follow but accurate designs, as I found myself. I built mine in a rugged style with uncut posts and tight joists to provide extra shade and support to the plants above, but you can make a stylish one with looser rail span or any style you like.

There is also one more positive element in addition to the money saved while doing it, and it is the satisfaction of having made a DIY structure with your own hands. Just this will give you extra pleasure while chilling out with family and friends in your pergola shade. After the construction, you can further enhance the appeal of your pergola with climbing plants and flowers for extra shade and beauty, as I did. Having no experience in carpentry what so ever, I still managed to build in 3 days a DIY patio pergola that will offer shade and comfort for years to come while having saved a lot of money as a icing on the cake.

From Dingy Whites to Naturally White!

February 22nd, 2012

Have you ever had those socks that no matter how much you wash them, they just never seem to let go of their grey ‘dingy’ look? Or how about that white Donna Karen top you bought last summer that’s been sitting in your closet waiting to be selected to adorn you for your trip to Hawaii, only to find yellow stains precariously placed throughout the material. Even better, the white gauze fabric you placed on your shelf 3 years ago that now you are ready to create into a masterful window dressing, but, oh no…yellow stains again!

There are several reasons why fabrics gray, yellow, and become dingy, including not using the right amount of detergent (i.e., using too much or too little detergent), insufficient rinsing, and/or the wash water temperature being too low. There are also optical brighteners and/or fluorescent whitening agents (FWA’s) that are applied during the manufacturing process to white and pastel colored fabrics that decompose when exposed to light or after prolonged storage. This chemical altering is often the culprit to why fabric starts to appear dingy and discolored with a yellow stain like cast. Sometimes the yellowing develops only where exposed to light. At other times, the FWAs can also be damaged by the use of chlorine bleach. Unfortunately, once the FWAs are damaged, the whitening agents can’t be reapplied to the fabric. To revitalize your fashionable garments and designer linens, J&O has provided the following tips:

Option #1: Pre soak whites in water with 1 cup hydrogen peroxide. If trying to get rid of stubborn stains, mix hydrogen peroxide with baking soda to create a paste. Apply to the stain and let it set for a moment. Rinse in cold water before loading into wash.

Option #2: Add ¼ cup of lemon juice to your load to assist in cleaning, whitening and neutralizing odors.

Option #3: Set wash cycle to warm and add ½ cup hydrogen peroxide in addition to your natural laundry detergent (suggest Borax or Arm & Hammer Washing Soda). Put load in and allow cycle to soak first to allow for mixture to work on stubborn stains and scents imbedded in your clothing. Soak for about a half hour then resume cycle. Line drying offers the best results for laundered clothing, but if not available, drying in your tumbler will do.

Tips When Buying Most Efficient Solar Panels

February 22nd, 2012

Buying things is very simple, but we tend to overlook important things when choosing a product. Here I will share some tips so that we know what to consider before buying most efficient solar panels for our home project.

First of all, search for recommendations either from our friends, neighbors, websites, magazines, etc. They have installed with one so they have the experiences to tell us what to be caution and avoided. But keep in mind that we should find recommendations around our living area especially when it comes to efficiency, different type of roof will have different efficiency ratings, and it is highly affected by geographical location too.

Secondly, cost is determined by the watt, brand, warranty, durability and certifications. So we have to know the higher the cost, the more efficient the solar panels is. If we have a quote with a cheaper cost, we can expect that we will get a lower quality of solar panels unit. My suggestion is, go for the most efficient solar panels for our home project. Most of them have a warranty at least 25 years and they only require low maintenance, we can expect that we will benefit from these panels for at least 25 years. Since it is a 25 years long warranty, I suggest that we go for well known brands or companies such as Sanyo, Koycera, Evergreen, Sharp, etc, because warranty is valid as long as the company operates.

Third, choose only most efficient solar panels that have certificates especially those qualified for government rebates. That is one of the main thing we as a homeowner go for, we would want to have as much as rebates to cover our purchasing and installation expenses. These certificates indicate that the panel has been tested and met the specification by independent laboratory.

Fourth, decide on which type of most efficient solar panels to go for. There are 3 types, first type is monocrystalline silicon, the most efficient and the smallest panels, but also the most expensive panels, go for this type if we have a small roof which is not enough to supply our home daily usage with a lower quality solar panels. 2nd type is polycrystalline silicon, also the most efficient solar panels but less efficient when compared to monocrystalline silicon panels, but this type is the most popular choice because it is much cheaper yet efficiency. 3rd type is amorphous silicon, is the cheapest and the least efficiency panels but is the biggest in size among them, which means these panels occupied a lot more roof spaces. If we plan for future upgrades and wanted to use this type of panels, make sure we have enough room space for future upgrades, otherwise go for more efficient solar panels. Now it is recommended that at least go for the 2nd type, polycrystalline silicon, unless necessary then we go for the first type, monocrystalline silicon.

Fifth, make sure we purchase solar panels mounting certified for our area and an efficient power inverter for our system. Normally certified mounting has wind certified for quality system using most efficient solar panels. We don’t want to have them damaged by wind storm. Whereas efficient power inverter is used to convert DC to AC for our home project and it is directly impact to the amount of time for the system to start paying for itself. So it is vital to get an efficient power inverter to prevent energy loss during conversion.

With all the tips above, we can start looking for most efficient solar panels for our home project. Remember, this is a one time investment so think wisely if we still want to go for a lower quality system.

Quick Tips About Where Bed Bugs Come From

February 18th, 2012

Where Do They Come From?

When bed bugs start showing up one of the first things people ask is, “Where do bed bugs come from?” It’s a good question and a natural one to ask, but perhaps a more important one is, “Why Do They Spread So Fast?”

Where they come from is important, but how they get from point A to point B is perhaps more important because if you understand their mode of travel, you can take the proper steps to prevent bed bugs from ending up in you home and ultimately your bed.

It is thought that before they began seeking out human beings as hosts for their blood meals, they lived in caves and fed on the bats inside the caves. As human beings began using these caves as shelter as well they began to feed off their human hosts.

Since bed bugs generally stay within 10-15 feet of their host they likely began hiding near humans during the day. It’s probable that they hid in the bedding.

Note – the word host here means the source of blood meals, typically humans, sometimes other mammals.

As humans moved from place to place they took these pests with them. Bed bugs are notorious hitchhikers and easily cling to clothing, bags, and other items in close proximity to people.

Why They Spread So Fast

In today’s day and age not much has changed in regards to how these blood-sucking pests get around. They get a ride with humans on their clothing, luggage and other items close to where people are living.

They have even been found in retail outlets like Nike, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Victoria’s Secret. It’s not know if the bed bugs hitched a ride on customers visiting the stores or maybe came in with a shipment, but it’s clear that they travel with ease.

In modern times one of the ways that they are quickly spreading around the world is by luggage…

So how do they get on the luggage? Here’s a common scenario, let’s say you happen to stay at a hotel with an infestation. Instead of using the metal luggage racks provide in the room to set your luggage on, you toss it on the bed and go out for a bite to eat. Bed bugs make their way in/on the luggage and you bring them home with you after your trip.

What do you do after you get home?

Maybe you take your clothes out of the luggage and wash them and then put your suitcase away.

Where do you store your suitcase?

I don’t know maybe under the bed, perhaps in the closet. Either way, you’ve just allowed bed bugs to enter your home. Now they will begin breeding, hiding and please forgive me for saying it, but feeding on you at night.

As you can see bed bugs can be transported extremely easily around the world and most people aren’t sure what steps to take to prevent them from entering their home. Hopefully you’ve learned a few things to ensure you don’t give ‘rides’ to these ‘hitchhikers’ without knowing it.

Generators For The Home – The Purchase Decision 101

February 18th, 2012

Have you been searching for a reliable home generator that actually works? You’re probably aware that there are numerous items out there that claim to generate energy and eliminate you from being attached to “the grid,” but how many of them really do what they’re supposed to do? The truth is that there are many of these generators for the home that just do not work, regardless of how much you spent for them. How can you be sure that you’re obtaining the right one, then? While there are many reasons that go into making a excellent home generator, there are some things that are global for anything. If you follow the below ides, you’ll be well on your way to getting the correct generator for you.

To begin with, the quality of a generator should be at the top of the list for you. You already aware that some companies are able to decrease their prices or be more competitive by using lower quality ingredients or practices, and while these generators for the home can save you a few bucks, it’s really not worth taking the risk with a low-quality generator. Along the same lines, then, you should be made aware that you may have to spend a bit more to get a high-end generator for the home that you know will function. The reputation of the manufacturer or business is also vital, since you can not really trust a shady company that no one really knows about. Do your homework and find out some information about the business. Are they trustworthy? Do their generators actually work? Has anyone been duped or ripped off by them? These are all things that you should take into consideration.

Secondly, the cost of the generator for the home should have some sway in your buying decision. This is intentionally listed second, because if the generator is of a excellent quality and the company has a good reputation, then price is not really a big deal: you should be willing to spend a little more cash on a good generator. But, you should still make sure that the generator is within your budget.

Last of all, you should find out if the generator for the home you’re considering actually functions, and what other people think about it. By doing a little investigating online, you’ll be able to read the opinions of other people that have used it, and how it worked for them. If they’re happy with the generator, then you have the green light to go ahead. But if they’re convincing you to stay away, then you should take their advice!

Knowing a Clutter Hoarder Well

February 17th, 2012

Some people may call themselves a clutter hoarder simply because he is surrounded with clutter. But do we truly understand what a hoarder is and if we are really one or not? There may be defining points to consider someone as mere clutterer or totally a hoarder of clutter.

We are often surrounded by people who are in one way or another looking helpless in their piles and piles of clutter about their home, office or anywhere they settle themselves in. And yes, it might even be us who are victims to clutters. To come up with a declutter solution is one of the things that can be demanded from a clutterer. To make sure that the solution is more effective, you have to identify if you are the classic clutterer or a serious hoarder to contend with.

Tidbits of facts surrounding a clutter hoarder:

• Hoarding is a serious psychological deficiency. The psychiatrist is the only person who can diagnose the condition and not our observation of anyone who can’t control himself to clutter around.

• Hoarders consider it a feat to come up with rational decisions whether to consider a thing as useful or not.

• This is a common case for adults who have ADHD. It is also commonly linked with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD. This is because a hoarder is obsessed about all her things and is uncontrollably forced to collect them. People who suffer from it are at a certain point compulsive to collect more stuffs whether with value or not.

Many things are affected with clutter hoarding and it generally affects the totality of a person’s perspective of himself and his life. Being unable to separate himself from his own clutter keeps him inside his own small and limited world. At the same time, as intense as his emotional attachment to his clutter, the clutter hoarder finds it hard to keep a secured relationship and attachment with the people around him. Since this is a psychological condition, this can be remedied effectively with sessions and therapy from a psychiatrist and coupled with the right medications.

Most often, hoarders don’t realize or deny the fact that they have the symptoms of being one as clutter seem to just pile up as naturally as anything else that comes in his life. This would need much acceptance and the desire to change his ways. Since hoarding seems natural as it is dysfunctional, we often shrug it off and hoarders are left to think of their own low self-esteemed self. If you know of someone who is a clutterer or you are yourself one, don’t let yourself slide down the pithole and instead seek for professional help in order to live a clutter free life.

The best woodworking course out there!

February 16th, 2012

Have you been looking for a woodworking course collection to suit all of your needs? There are a number of them out there, and I have tried lots of them, but a lot of them are crap! Why do I say that? I have spent a lot of time studying online and reading stuff. Most of them just left me with more questions than answers. They skip over many critical parts, their diagrams are confusing, unclear, or even wrong. No wonder woodworking seemed so difficult! Most of the woodworking course collections I’ve bought have failed to satisfy my needs and did not help me craft the pieces I was after.

However there is one complete guide that helped me and can help you too! I have reached the conclusion that Ted’s Woodworking Package had the best info on woodworking course, easily explained, and full of tons of plans and projects. He spent the last 2 years to create a comprehensive woodworking package with a clear, detailed, complex system that didn’t leave anything to the imagination. The diagrams are easy to read and understand, unlike several others I found online.

Not only was I successful in crafting the pieces I wanted for my backyard lawn, but I’m actually starting to make money of my woodworking hobby because my friends saw how beautiful and professional my work looked and now they all want something done!

The package contains printable guides and plans, for beginners, for intermediates, and advanced users! It is simply outstanding and a great investment for anyone starting out. I wish I had these blueprints when I was building my first outdoor deck.

This is for sure the best woodworking course collection out there! You have to get this kit, especially if you are at a beginner level into woodworking. In my opinion this is a bargain, and I just had to pass the news to other woodworking passionate like me! The plans and level of detail will set a new standard in the field. You can find out more stuff on the woodworking course guide that worked for me here: Woodworking Design 101!
