Shed Blueprints – Claim Your Free Shed Plan

February 9th, 2012

Free is good. Free allows you to preview a product of a company. This is your time to see if you can read and understand how they put together their shed blueprints and woodworking patterns.

If the free shed plan is not what you are looking for it at least makes you aware of the work quality of the company. Order the shed plan that better fits your needs and you can be assured of the design and quality as was illustrated with the free shed plan.

Or, you may wish to make your own plans. I hope you are good at it, I know I am not. It takes hours and much critiquing and editing to be sure all is correct. Modifying a plan is much easier than designing from the very beginning.

Of course, you have heard that some locations require a permit. Check this before getting your heart set on a particular type of shed. There may be requirements that your city or county may require. Unfortunately, there is a penalty fine for not doing so.

For instance, if we build in the city, we found that we had to meet many requirements as to type of shed, location, materials to be used and to meet inspection standards. We did not buiild the shed; too much hassle.

In another county where we are building our future house, the storage shed plans had to also be included and therefore we let the construction company gather the permits and the requirements from the zoning board. We are building the storage shed.

It is a good idea to order pre-designed shed plans and get information on building materials. Most of us go to the lumber and hardware store and buy whatever appeals to us. Also when we apply to permitting, our personally drawn plans may not be accepted. Your permitting office may require plans prepared by a drafts person.

These are other considerations to think about:

* What are the best types of construction materials to be used for your local weather conditions?

* Will you be installing flooring set permanently in a concrete foundation or mounted on blocks?

* Will you meet requirements set forth by permitting, zoning, etc. such as shed being placed a certain distance to the property line, water line, and septic tank?

The truth about permitting concerns public and personal safety, functionality and legal needs to abide by building codes and regulations. The size of your shed will determine if you need permitting or not.

Planning is the most critical stage before building your shed. Visit the hobby page of Tricia Deed at http://www.Infotrish.vpweb.com/ and review Welcome Woodworking Enthusiasts and download your free shed plan.

Coffee Table Plans 101

February 7th, 2012

Coffee Tables are an integral part of a modern day home. And as you already know, every piece of furniture you have in your home reflects a part of you. In this article we will talk about the most common questions surrounding plans for coffee tables. Coffee tables are made of many materials but since I have always loved wood, I would be discussing only that.

First, you must understand that coffee tables plans vary a lot. Some concentrate on a very simplistic look while others are more creative. Before choosing one for yourself, do make sure that you are capable of the work involved, which would depend on the level of your woodworking experience.

If you are new, and are starting out, I suggest you start with a basic layout. When you have more confidence in your abilities, you can make a more complex coffee table.

Another thing I would recommend is that you get a step-by-step plan. Not only these are very easy to follow, they are very useful when you want to customize them to your needs. Such plans are suited for both beginners and professionals alike.

Now, a common question I am usually asked is “Where do I get good coffee table plans?” There are several answers to that question. You can get good plans from woodworking magazines, buy some from carpenters, download some freely off the internet, etc.
But, the problem with following these plans is that they are not well optimized for the beginner. They are also very difficult to modify. Therefore, I would recommend you take a look at some of the professional coffee table plans.

Not only these are very detailed and are step-by-step, but are also easy to follow and change.

A lot of people I know give up their woodworking hobby because they make a mistake or their coffee table do not turn out as they had planned. Usually this is because following a bad written plan. To eliminate all of that, professional plans are the way to go.
Look at it this way – you are saving a lot of material and time by investing some amount in a good plan. That should be your strategy. After all, woodworking is not only good as a hobby but is extremely cost effective too.

Another common beginner error is that they do not read the full plan before following. They just look at the design, skim through the requirements and directly start on it. I would recommend each and every one of you to read the whole plan first. See if it is for you or not. Without an adequate knowledge you are more likely to make mistakes.

So to recap everything –

  • A good coffee table plan is a step-by-step and easy to modify, preferably written by a professional.
  • Always read the plan completely before following it.
  • Depending on your woodworking skills choose a plan which you can follow

And lastly, have fun doing all of this. Because ultimately, this is your hobby and failure, success, mistakes and marvels are all a part of it. Well what are you waiting for? Good luck with your new coffee table!

6 Tips For Reducing Energy Use Around Your House

February 7th, 2012

Many of us are shocked each month when the electricity bill arrives. We shouldn’t be, and the prevailing wisdom tells us that this is only going to get worse!

Once and for all, we need to take energy use seriously, and take real steps toward cutting down. Not only will this help save on your electricity bill, but you can also help to conserve energy at the same time. Here are some steps to take that will get you started.

  1. Talk it over with your family or roommates to make sure everyone in your household is on the same page when it comes to saving energy. This will help to ensure that everyone participates in your plan.
  2. Start out with some simple things like always turning out the lights when they are not in the room. Even if you are only going to be away for a few minutes, turn them off. Every little bit really does help!
  3. Always be sure to turn off the television, fan, or heater when they are not in use. Even these little things help to save, and they do add up over time.
  4. You can exchange your old incandescent light bulbs for new fluorescent or CFL bulbs. These use far less energy and power, and if used consistently will amount to a great savings.
  5. Get one of these energy saving devices that are out. These will keep track of how much energy is being used in your house, and will help you see where you are using it and where you might be able to cut down.
  6. Finally, one of the best ways to reduce your electricity bill and save energy is to make your own! There are some very helpful guides on the market today that will walk you step by step through the process of making your own solar panels or wind turbines. These create free energy for your home and appliances, and in some cases you may even be able to sell some of the energy your create back to the electric company. What could be a better “savings” than that?

General Costs of a Solar Panel Kits and Installation

February 7th, 2012

Anyone with a ‘green conscience’ has considered installing solar panels on their home. It’s a great way to do something for the planet and save some money at the same time. But the question that invariably comes up is ‘How much will this cost me?’ We can help answer that question with a few rules of thumb that will guide you to getting on board with the clean power revolution.

Equipment Costs
Solar panel kits come in all shapes and sizes. There are literally hundreds of systems out there, and nearly every one of them is custom built for its application. But we can make some generalizations about systems for households, sicne this is one of the most common installations.

Solar panels themselves cost about $3-$4 per watt. That means if you decide you want a 4,000 watt (W) system (or a 4 kilowatt (kW) system), the panels would cost about:

$3/W x 4,000W = $12,000

Of course you can’t just throw up some panels and expect to draw electricity. You need wiring, mounting, and an inverter, which changes the DC power you get from the panels to AC power that your house uses. These generally add about a $1 per watt to the total. So, taking our example from above:

$1/W x 4,000W = $4,000

So, a good rule of thumb is $4 per watt for the solar power equipment. Of course this can vary by the size of installation (the larger the project, the lower the price per watt), your location (if you live in a remote area you may pay more for transportation), and the type of panels needed (some situations require higher voltage or specially-built panels).

Installation Costs
So you have solar panels, now you need to actually to put them up. Chances are you are not an electrician or roofer and you’d rather not spend your weekend(s) on a ladder. So how much can you expect to pay for installation?

Installers will charge more based on how difficult the installation is. For instance, a homeowner that has a three story, steeply pitched roof will pay far more than a single story flat-roof homeowner. But here again we have some rules of thumb that will help you determine a budget.

Installers generally charge about $3-$4 per watt for installation. This covers labor, design of the system, insurance, licenses, and equipment needed. Continuing our example from above:

$4/W x 4,000 = $16,000

So, we can reasonably assume that $8 per watt ($4 for equipment and $4 for labor) would get us pretty darn close to a budget for a system. Budgeting $9 per watt would probably cover unforeseen issues that frequently arise and give you a nice cushion.

The good news is that these prices are going down. There are more solar companies than ever now, driving down installation costs. And with the global economic slowdown and supply increases, solar panels are actually coming down too.

Basic Steps for Building a Chicken Coop

February 6th, 2012

The good thing about building a chicken coop is that it is easy and relatively inexpensive to build. For a basic coop, what you will need is chicken wire, lumber, basic hand tools, wood screws, and a few other miscellaneous items. Raising chickens is an economical and ingenious way to provide for your family, you can have fresh eggs daily and meat from the chickens year round. Building a chicken coop with chicken wire is an easy task that can be completed in one day. Then you will have a place for you chickens that you can they can be proud of.

First of all, before you even pick out the plans you are going to use, you must check your local animal care laws to make sure that keeping chickens in your backyard is legal and what other rules you will have to follow. Many people do not know about this or ignore it, but in either case if you begin building a chicken coop and then local authorities find out about it (and trust me they will because chickens are noisy and someone will eventually complain), they will take everything you build and they give you a hefty fine. All this could be avoided if you just checked what was legal before you started building a chicken coop.

The floor of your coop is the foundation on which everything else you build will rest. So take a quick look at the area around the coop and make sure the ground is level and that is it is a high enough area where it will not flood when it rains.

Now you can start building. The first thing to do is put down a wooden floor by using plywood sheets. Keep in mind; these instructions are for permanent coop that won’t be moved. Chickens usually require 4 feet of moving space so plan accordingly. This means that the size of your coop will depend on how many chickens you want to raise.

Next, frame the walls of the coop by evenly spacing 2x4s around the perimeter of the coop no more than 16 inches apart. The roof can either be attached or detachable depending on how you want access for cleaning. The door is a simple swing door, must similar to a dog door you place in your house. Install it by cutting out a door in the front wall of the coop and reattach the cut piece to a hinge over the door.
Now, comes the fence. Once again the area you need to fence will depend on the number of chicken you have. Now that you have the area figured out, drive wooden stakes into the ground around your coop. Now, staple chicken wire stake to stake. Remember, this is a permanent coop, so in order to protect your chickens from predators, dig a one foot trench and bury the chicken wire. This will deter predators like cats, foxes, rats and other animals that want get at your chickens. Now you have simple plan for building a chicken coop quickly and easily.

How to Get Professionally Installed Home Insulation That’s Cheaper Than DIY

February 5th, 2012

*Do you want your home insulated this Winter but are worried about the costs?
*Afraid you’ll have to DIY the task to reduce costs?
*Worried about the finished job and the mess if you DIY?
*Would you like a quality finished job but think you can’t afford to have it done professionally?
*Have you dismissed the idea of a home insulation grant because you think you’re not entitled to one as you own your own home or are in full-time employment?
Well if you answer yes to any of the questions above then the chances are you’re in luck and in for a nice surprise this Winter.

You Really Can afford Home Insulation This Winter
People in any of the situations above are often put off the idea of having cavity wall or loft insulation installed, even though it is something they would like to have done, as they are frequently poorly informed and have no idea of what they may be entitled to. Home insulation does not have to be as expensive as you think and there is more than one way to reduce costs than going down the DIY route. I am going to explain a way that for many people, who thought the costs were too great and that they were ineligible for help, you can have professionally installed insulation at a fraction of the normal cost and in most cases even cheaper than DIY.

In the UK if you own your own home or rent it from a private landlord you are entitled to at least a partial insulation grant of up to 70%, if not a full grant! These are Government-backed grants that are part of a Government initiative between themselves and the utility companies to reduce carbon emissions in the UK and have all homes insulated by 2015. In taking up one of these grants you also have the satisfaction of getting some of you money back from the utility companies who have not passed to us, as customers, the reductions in fuel prices they have experienced.

If you apply and receive a home insulation grant not only are you going to be given a significant grant towards the expenditure of the insulation but you will also be entitled to have it professionally installed at no extra cost.

Still think you are not entitled to a grant because you are in full time employment? Well think again because this is no barrier whatsoever as long as you own your own home, or you are a private tenant, you are entitled to a home insulation grant of up to 70%. This could even be 100% if you are on certain benefits, tax credits or allowances.

Think That DIY is Cheaper? Then Think Again
If you think the prospect of professionally installed insulation partially funded by a government-backed grant is not appealing enough and you are still considering DIY then you need to take a look at the following 10 reasons on why not to DIY.

*DIY is Usually More expensive – even taking into account the buy one get one free offers that are available, DIY is usually more expensive than with an insulation grant.*(full cost comparison information available)
*No Extras – the grants scheme involves lots of extras including lagging of pipes & tanks, draught proofing & insulating the hatch and fitting a walk board.
*Takes Longer – Insulating a loft yourself could take you most of a day. A professional installer can complete the work in around an hour.
*Quality of Workmanship – Unless you are a seasoned DIY enthusiast, the quality of your finished job will not be up to the same standard.
*Level of Fitness – It requires a reasonable level of fitness to climb through the hatch and tread around carefully.
*Risk of Personal Injury – Lofts are dark, cramped and dangerous. The chances of banging your head or falling through the ceiling are great.
*Greater Risk of Damage – Pipework can easily be burst and electrical cabling can be disturbed. There is also a chance of damaging ceilings.
*Dirty and Messy – Most lofts contain thick layers of dust and fibres from previously laid insulation.
*Makes You Itch – It is a well known fact that laying insulation makes you itch. Professional installers are used to it.
*You Can’t DIY Cavity Walls – It is not possible to fit Cavity Wall Insulation yourself. It requires specialist equipment to blow the mineral wool in.
Taking advantage of one of these home insulation grants will result in professionally installed insulation at a fraction of the true cost and in a fraction of the time. You will be doing you bit for the environment by reducing carbon emissions as well as significantly reducing your heat loss and saving on future fuel bills.

Magnetic Generators and the Difference Between Permanent Magnets and Electromagnets

February 3rd, 2012

We are reading a lot on the Web about magnetic generators and their ability to generate free energy.

The idea that we can generate our own electricity simply by building a device using inexpensive magnets is absolutely amazing. If it is possible to generate electricity without relying on any external fuel source other than magnets then it won’t be long before commercial magnetic generators are being produced.

I have seen them called electromagnetic generators, permanent magnetic generators, perpetual magnetic generators and magnetic power generators.

Being an ordinary non-scientifically minded individual I find it all a bit confusing.

So what is the difference between an electromagnet and a permanent magnet?

Permanent magnets can be made out of many different naturally occurring substances of which magnetite is the most powerful. They can also be made out of synthetic substances such as neodymium. A neodymium magnet is the strongest type of permanent magnet and is sometimes described as a super magnet.

Electromagnets are far stronger than even the most powerful permanent magnet.

The electromagnet was invented in 1825 by William Sturgeon, a British electrician. He demonstrated that a seven ounce piece of iron that was wrapped around with wires and had a small electrical current running through it could lift nine pounds of metal.

An electromagnet becomes magnetic only when an electrical current flows through it and a generator that uses electromagnets or “field coils” requires a flow of electricity through the electromagnets for the device to work. If there is no flow of electricity through the wires then it does not work.

The magnetic generator however uses the rotating magnets to generate electricity in the first place. It generates more energy than is required to keep the magnets rotating and so you can use the excess to power your home.

The plans that we see on the web detailing exactly how to build your own magnetic power generator use permanent magnets not electromagnets.

Energy-Efficient Appliances and Lighting For Green Homes

February 2nd, 2012

Many people are considering a solar-power kit or solar-panel system for their home. This is a wonderful way to save money, produce clean energy, and “go green”. But before you do this you have to make sure your home is as energy-efficient as possible. The less energy you use, the greater impact your solar-power system will have on your wallet and the planet. This article will teach you about energy-efficient lighting and appliances.

Be an Energy Star

One of the best things you can do is to start putting energy efficiency high on your requirements when shopping for new appliances. Look for the ENERGY STAR logo. This is a government program intended to help consumers find the most energy efficient units. This program also puts the average consumption on each unit so that you can compare two appliances side by side.

Drying and Cooking

Generally creating heat with electricity is less efficient than creating heat by burning gas. Heating with electricity requires that the electrical current heat a coil, which then gives off heat. Gas appliances burn gas and discharge the heat directly to its intended use. This means that for cooking and drying, the best bang for your buck is with gas appliances. You’ll notice with gas appliances that your clothes tend to dry quicker and your food cooks faster.

Washing Machines

With the emphasis on energy efficiency in the last few years, high-efficiency (HE) washers have gained in popularity. Many HE washers use 70% less water in each load. They use a side load feature, instead of top load, which means less water is needed since the clothes spin through the water sitting at the bottom of the drum.

Conventional top-load washer need to fill the drum up with water for the clothes to get wet. The HE units spend less time and energy filling the tub, draining the tub, and rinsing the clothes. It also means there is less weight for the drum to spin, saving energy. In arid areas, some water companies are offering rebates for water efficient appliances. Remember, saving water and saving energy go hand in hand.

Power Strips & Electronics

Most electronic devices draw a “phantom load” of up to one-third of their operating power. This means that even when your DVD player is technically off, it is drawing electricity. This electricity is often intended to allow remote controls to work (if your DVD player was completely off the remote would not work).

This may not sound like much, but if every electronic device is drawing a little power 24 hours a day this can add up. The best way to get rid of this waste is to get a power strip for each area of the house that has several of these devices (e.g. the home office, the entertainment center, the kitchen). At the end of each evening, and as you leave for work, just make a habit of going around and shutting off the all the power strips.

Lighting

By now you’ve probably heard of Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL’s). These lights can use up to 80% less energy than conventional incandescent light bulbs. Remember how electricity uses a current through a coil to generate heat? Conventional light bulbs work much the same way. You can see the coil in an old incandescent light bulb. With CFLs, a gas is heated to generate light, using far less electricity and in most cases lasting much longer. These lights should be standard issue in every home these days. Just make sure to get the low-mercury bulbs. And don’t forget, solar garden and security lights can handle virtually any outdoor lighting needs you have.

Disposal

When getting rid of your old appliances, don’t forget about the environment. Many appliances, especially refrigerators, contain harmful chemicals and gases. Call your local waste management company for proper methods of disposal for older units. Even better than disposal is recycling your old fridges, stoves, and washers. Many companies will come and take them off your hands for a minimal charge, and they strip down the metal components for scrap and rebuild parts that can be reused. Another great way to recycle: Craiglist or your local classified ads. Many first time home buyers, landlords, and dormitories take old appliances and use them.
